Yaama maliyaa!

Hello friend!

Yaama.

Hello. Gayrr ngaya Christopher Orchard. I am glad you have found this website, and I hope you find the resources here useful. All resources on this site are free to use, modify and adapt in ways that will suite your language learning needs for the benefit of the Gamilaraay Nation. My hope is that one day Garay ngiyani Gamilaraay guwaalaylay, we all will be talking to each other in Gamilaraay.

My statement on accountability in resource development and the twelve underlying principles I am looking to work towards through my creative output here is itemized below.

– 12 Guiding Principles –

Principle 1-4 focus on Foundations of language revitalisation.
Principles 5-8 focus on Cultural protocol.
Principles 9-12 focus on Strategy and sustainability.

1. Language awareness

Gamilaraay Revitalisation efforts will benefit from highly motivated members and small groups from the speech community who can mobilise initial efforts from which awareness can later be capitalised on into larger activities.

2. Intergenerational transmission

Gamilaraay language and culture must not be disconnected. Learning language should promote a sense of belonging, strengthen, and affirm identity, and contribute positively to community healing. Gamilaraay language revitalisation efforts must be multi-generational, connecting across all generations from Elders to babies.

3. Language ecologies

Gamilaraay language revitalisation needs to be both National (Gamilaraay Nation), and Local (Town/Locality) being both General and Specific – being constantly aware of the local specific needs, and Gamilaraay Nation’s general needs –operational and strategic. That ecology includes meeting community needs both on-country and off-country (Diaspora).

Gamilaraay language revitalisation will also benefit from revitalisation of other Indigenous Australian languages, growing our relationships and interacting with others makes us all stronger.

4. Genuine access

Gamilaraay revitalisation efforts will benefit from increased access to language, and importantly access to language programs that are a good cultural match for the broad aspirations of the Nation (both on-country and off-country).

5. Connecting community

Gamilaraay language should serve as a cultural vehicle that connects disconnected members of community. Language learning should be a catalyst for community cohesion and will build stronger relationships as exposure increases.

6. Cultural authority

Gamilaraay language revitalisation programs need sponsorship from Elders, knowledge holders, and those with cultural authority. Elder engagement does not need to be speaking language, but it needs to legitimise programs through cultural authority and to uphold protocols.

7. Cultural safety

Gamilaraay language revitalisation will benefit from safe spaces where people can learn at their own pace, in ways that support peoples individual and genuine human needs.

8. Culture-Critical

Gamilaraay language revitalisation will benefit from identifying the culture-critical elements of knowledge that need attention and prioritise it. Revitalisation efforts will coalesce around places where community assigns most value to language use.

.

9. Strategic orientation

Gamilaraay language revitalisation will benefit from serious and critical reflection on achievable strategic goals that are backed by community, and under community control. Community will be more likely to sustain efforts where they have ownership.

10. Realistic goals

Linked to a strategic orientation, Gamilaraay revitalisation will benefit from a strategic orientation backed by a clear and achievable suite of operational goals – taking an iterative and multi-generational approach to development.

11. Living language

Gamilaraay language revitalisation needs to recognise language variations as legitimate in the revitalisation process and recognise each community member has different expectations of their own language use, and what they want and need from language – and that these are legitimate wants and needs.

12. Allow time

Gamilaraay language revitalisation will benefit from deep integration. If it sits on the periphery of peoples complicated and complex lives it will suffer from a lack of participation. Language needs to be integrated

Accountability

If you find a resource that isn’t right. Let me know on the contact form, you will hear from me, and I will let you know how I intend to make things right. I won’t always get things correct here, or in life… but I do promise I will make things right when I don’t. I hope these resources support your Gamilaraay language learning journey.
